Notice of Cancellation of the 2020 Nevada District Conference

The impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 ("COVID-19") pandemic on court operations in the District of Nevada and around the country has been historic. The President of the United States recently declared a national emergency in response to the public health risk posed by exposure to COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classified COVID-19 as a pandemic and advised the general public to take precautions necessary to reduce the possibility of exposure to the virus in order to slow the spread of the disease. The Governor of the State of Nevada has declared a public health emergency throughout the state in response to the spread of COVID-19 in Nevada. During a March 17, 2020 press conference, Governor Sisolak stated that all Nevadans should stay home to protect family and the public. Yesterday, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas announced the cancellation of the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference that had been scheduled for July 27 – 30, 2020 in Portland, Oregon.

Mindful of those developments, in consultation with Chief Judge Du, in view of the considerable health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and with considerable regret, the Co-Chairs of the 2020 Nevada District Court Conference have decided that it is necessary to cancel that Conference, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2020. The cancellation decision was a difficult one, but the health and safety of all of us must remain the highest priority. We do not know with any certainty how long this outbreak will last.

The 2020 Nevada District Court Conference Planning Committee did an outstanding job in developing what was certain to be an exceptional Conference in 2020. The tentative date for the 2021 Nevada District Court Conference is Thursday, May 20, 2021 at the Joe Crowley Student Union on the UNR Campus.
