Judge Hilary L. Barnes

Biography

Hilary L. Barnes was sworn in as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Nevada (Reno) on March 31, 2023, after 24 years of private practice. Judge Barnes currently serves as a member of the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Judges Education Committee, acting as BJEC newsletter editor, chairs the Nevada Local Bankruptcy Rules Committee, and is the judicial co-liaison to the ABI SW Conference. Immediately prior to joining the bench, Judge Barnes was a member of a bankruptcy boutique in Arizona, where she focused on all aspects of corporate and consumer bankruptcy. She served as chair of the Arizona State Bar Bankruptcy Section, president of the Arizona Bankruptcy American Inn of Court, and as a Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative. Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, she earned her B.A. (with honors) from the University of Chicago and her J.D. from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, where she earned the ABA Editorial Excellence Award while serving as editor of the Jurimetrics Journal of Law, Science & Technology.
